LWV President Mary Alice Serafini will speak on the ballot issues in the Nov. 4 election.
The public is invited to this meeting of Altrusa. The charge for the optional buffet lunch is $11.00.
NOVEMBER
Land Preservation/State Study
When: Wednesday, November 19, 6:00-7:30PM
Where: Fayetteville Public Library
Topic: protecting land with conservation tax incentives.
Speakers: Attendees will have an opportunity to hear differing opinions from Joyce Hale, who has property with a conservation easement, and Bob Kossieck, who represents property rights advocates. Dorothy Effa, graduate student from the University of Arkansas, will present the findings from her recent survey on conservation easements.
Providing State Tax Incentives for Land Conservation is the 2008 LWVAR study topic. For maximum benefit, attendees should review the study materialsand references from guest panelists before the meeting. A membership consensus will be taken at the January meeting.

Transportation Study in Northwest Arkansas Discussion
When: Wednesday, December 17, 11:30-1:00
Where: Ann Henry Board Room, Fayetteville Public Library
The League examines and approves by consensus local policy stands each March. In order to revisit the League's stands on transportation, the December 17 program participants will review transportation research and propose revisions or additions to the League's policy stands. We look forward to a lively and thoughtful discussion. Those who would like to participate in the study circle should read the following documents:
- Visioning Rail Transit in NWA (U.A. Community Design Center). Scroll down for a link to a book (May 2007).
- 2030 Regional Long Range Transportation Plan (Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission), April 2006.
This is a lengthy document, so participants should feel free choose the more relevant sections for discussion purposes.

Moderator is Lynn Donald-Carver, Program Director for Arkansas Support Network.

APRIL
Supporting Local Markets

Where: Fayetteville Public Library
Speakers: Liz Slape, co-founder of Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance; Lisa Sharp, co-founder of Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance & owner of Nightbird Books; and Marne Coit, Staff Attorney, National Agricultural Law Center.
Sharp and Slape will talk about the importance of local business, its benefits
to the local economy and public policy initiatives that can support and
encourage the vitality of local businesses. They will talk about the new
Fayetteville Independent Business Alliance and their plans to support
Fayetteville's locally owned businesses, including the Fayetteville
Farmers Market. Liz's family owns Penguin Ed's BBQ and she worked with
them for many years. Lisa is Frank Sharp's (Ozark Mountain Smokehouse)
daughter-in-law and owner of Nightbird Books. Both women have a long
history in Fayetteville and with local business and are passionate about
our community and creating a vibrant local economy.
Marne's expertise is in local food systems and public policy. She will
focus her presentation on innovative public policy at the local and state
levels that supports local food markets and local growers. She has a wealth
of knowledge about public policy initiatives that support local food
systems at the local, state and national levels.

Speaker: Rep. Uvalde Lindsey on the legislative session.
Potluck dinner. Bring a covered dish to share.
