SEPTEMBER
Electricity in Arkansas: A Rapidly Evolving Issue
When: Wednesday, September 23, 5:30-6:00PM membership party; 6:00-8:00PM program.
Where: Fayetteville Public Library.
A panel of experts will discuss the electrical power dilemma facing Arkansas and ratepayers, including the proposed SWEPCO rate increase and developing energy efficiency in Arkansas. Hoyt Purvis, University of Arkansas journalism professor, will serve as moderator of a distinguished panel: Sandra Byrd, VP, Strategic Affairs, Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation and former chair of the Arkansas Public Service Commission; Nicholas Brown, President and CEO of Southwest Power Pool, Inc.; Ken Smith, Executive Director of Audubon Arkansas, an organization involved in the lawsuit over the J.W.Turk, Jr. coal-fired plant; and Eddie Moore, an attorney working with Audubon on electric efficiency and ratepayers issues and representing the Arkansas Public Policy Panel on energy issues during the 2009 legislative session. OCTOBER
Transitions from Foster Care to Adulthood
When: Wednesday, October 14, 11:30AM-1:00PM.
Where: Washington Regional Education Center at Pat Walker Center for Seniors, 12 E. Appleby Rd., Fayetteville.
Panelists will discuss Arkansas's Foster Youth Transition Plan--improvements and remaining problems.
Expert panalists are Cecile Blucker, Director, Division of Children and Family Services, DHS; John Zalenski, Assistant Director of DHS Children and Family Services; Toma Whitlock, Manager of Transitional Services for Youth, CFS, DHS; and Becky Shaffer, Founder of Saving Grace, a program for transitional foster youth. NOVEMBER
Movie: Split Estate
When: Saturday, November 7, 12:00 noon.
Where: Fayetteville Continuing Education Center on the square (also known as the Global Campus).

Legislative Luncheon

A delicious catered lunch will be available for those of you who make a reservation by November 18th. For $10 you will have a choice of either a garlic and herb chicken quiche or a spinach quiche, with a mixed green salad, a drink and a desert. Marilyn Edwards, Washington County Judge, will speak on issues affecting Washington County. Ms. Edwards, the first female judge for Washington County, will speak for a short time and then take questions from the audience.

Film Iron Jawed Angels to Kick Off Women's History Month

MARCH
President of the League of Women Voters of the United States to Speak in Little Rock
When: Monday, March 1, 2010, at 12:00PM.
Where: University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service (Sturgis Hall).
Mary Wilson, 17th President of the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) will speak on "2010: A Year of Celebration and Climate Concerns." LWVUS is celebrating 90 years of advocacy and public policy work and currently focusing on environmental concerns.

90th Anniversary Celebration of the League of Women Voters and Women's Right to Vote
When: Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at 11:15AM.
Where: Arkansas State Capitol Rotunda, Little Rock.
In honor of all the women and men who fought for women's right to vote, citizens will celebrate 90 years of accomplishments in Arkansas and throughout the nation. With a proclamation from Governor Mike Beebe, the League will honor the memory of suffragette Florence Lee Brown Cotnam and her wise words to legislators throughout the country to gain women's right to vote. A photograph of suffragettes of Arkansas on the stairs of the Capitol in 1920 will be placed on display for students who visit the Capitol to view during the month of March.
Come share in the celebration of our remarkable past and hopeful future. All of us treasure the right to vote and the value that the League of Women Voters offers to citizens to become informed voters.
The League of Women Voters of Pulaski County is organizing a dinner at Lilly's Dim Sum on Monday night to fellowship with President Wilson (see above). Women in History Banquet

Women who have made significant contributions to the local community will be honored. This year's honorees are Bonnie Cook, Denise Garner, Donna Stjerna, Dolores Stamps, and Doris Cassidy.

Speaker: Jeannie Whayne, Professor of History at the University of Arkansas, will speak on "Black Women in the Civil Rights Movement in Arkansas." We will also honor Marion Orton for her many years of service.
